Back from the Lower Reading Room in the Bodleian Library, I might add that I am not the only one suffering from this condition. A certain chignoned fellow in literae humaniores at New College was observed by me pacing around the rooms all afternoon with a Greek book in her hands. Had I been wanting to work, this would have been most annoying; but being in the mood for some people-watching, I was grateful to her for the opportunity to avoid work without having to pay £1.25 for an espresso at Blackwell's.

Certainly, I can only have an idea (of genius or otherwise) come to my mind when the activity of my brain is paced by some outside stimulus. I used to go for a walk on the Ch.Ch. meadow any time I was in need of a thought. I designed my thesis over two laps around it.

For powerful thoughts about the meaning of life and death, Beethoven's 7th will be needed. And many of the gentle ideas developed on my humble weblog were had while listening to an Ebbe's sermon.
